We provide state of the art medical and surgical treatments for various eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and glaucoma. Dr. Sastry is a board certified ophthalmologist with fellowship training in eyelid and facial surgery. Hence, he is one of a few hundred plastic surgeons in the US who is uniquely qualified to treat various eyelid diseases including skin cancer, drooping eyelids, tear duct blockage, thyroid eye disease and cosmetic issues concerning the appearance of your eyes. Dr. Sastry is frequently consulted by other plastic surgeons and other specialists for his expertise. Cosmetic procedures including upper and lower lid blepharoplasty (for excess eyelid skin and puffy, baggy eyes) are performed safely in the office surgical suite.

Our practice was started in the 1960s by Dr. Thomas Diamond. In the 1970s Dr. Marshall Heller joined Dr. Diamond. Both Drs. Diamond and Heller had the reputation of being very ethical and of providing excellent care to their patients in the bay area. When they retired (Dr. Diamond in 2001 and Dr. Heller in 2005), they entrusted their patients to Dr. Sastry who is continuing this tradition. Unlike large medical groups, Dr. Sastry and his staff provide individualized attention to each and every patient. We communicate and coordinate with other doctors/specialists to provide the best possible care for our patients. PHILOSOPHY EYE CARE

Philosophy Eye Care -Ragh Sastry MD

Age brings bags and wrinkles

Philosophy on eye care of Ragh Sastry MD is that age brings bags and wrinkles under the eyes and excess folds of skin on the upper lids, which gives the whole face a tired and sad expression. A quick glance at any fashion magazine will reveal the importance of beauty and youthful appearance in our society. The workplace has also become more youth oriented and competitive. Men and women in every business need to present a vibrant appearance to improve their chance at success both professionally and personally. It is for these reasons that Dr. Ragh Sastry chooses to offer facial cosmetic rejuvenation and eye surgery at his San Jose and Morgan Hill locations. To balance the demand for modern aesthetic goals, the philosophy of Dr. Sastry also recognizes the effects of facial cosmetic surgery gone too far, as with celebrities such as Michael Jackson and Joan Rivers. Dr. Sastry is often consulted for eye problems arising from aggressive plastic surgery.

Dr. Sastry believes in obtaining the desired results with minimal surgery. He employs a combination of minimally invasive techniques, lasers, and radio frequency technology to achieve uncompromising results. After undergoing facial cosmetic surgery or eye surgery at our San Jose or Morgan Hill locations, patients are able to return to their normal activities usually within a week.

During the consultation, Dr. Sastry carefully listens to the patient’s goals. The patient is encouraged to bring old photos so that he can review the changes that have occurred over time. “It’s about paying attention to the patient’s age, features and underlying structures and planning the surgery accordingly,” says Dr. Sastry. He does not believe in “selling” as many procedures as possible.

Together with the patient Dr. Sastry develops a treatment plan best suited for the patient. This treatment plan may include a combination of microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, facial cosmetic surgery, eyelid surgery, and other eye surgery. For the convenience of our San Jose and Morgan Hill area patients, we are pleased to make these diverse treatments available under one roof.

After meeting Dr. Sastry, you will understand why more and more patients are referring him to their friends. To find out whether facial rejuvenation or cosmetic eye surgery might be right for you, contact the San Jose or Morgan Hill office of Dr. Ragh Sastry today.

Cataract Surgery, and Blepharoplasty –Offered by Dr. Sastry

Serving San Jose Morgan Hill and Gilroy

Cataract Surgery, and Blepharoplasty are offered by Dr. Ragh Sastry. We offers a wide range of ophthalmologic care, including cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment, and blepharoplasty at his San Jose office. Patients in Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Palo Alto, and elsewhere in the bay area come to the Center for Eye Care & Cosmetic Surgery for the most advanced eye care available.

Cataract Surgery

As your eyes age, you will likely encounter decreased visual acuity and focusing ability. One of the most common of these conditions is the cataract, which occurs when the eye’s natural lens undergoes chemical changes that cause it to become cloudy. A cloudy lens cannot effectively focus light on the retina; the result is blurred or even obscured vision.

The only way to treat a cataract is through surgery. Dr. Sastry uses a cataract surgery technique at his San Jose office that requires only a tiny incision. Through this incision, he removes the faulty lens and replaces it with a safe, synthetic lens. Once the lens has been successfully implanted, there is no need for sutures, as the small incision will heal itself quickly.

Most of Dr. Sastry’s cataract surgery patients from San Jose and the surrounding bay area are pleased to find that they have 20/20 vision within just a few days of the procedure. As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of complications. In most cases, however, this risk is far outweighed by the improvement in vision and quality of life experienced by patients who choose to undergo the procedure.

Glaucoma Treatment

In a healthy eye, fluid fills the eye at the same rate at which drains, resulting in constant pressure. If the drainage system gets blocked, the pressure inside the eye increases, resulting in a condition called glaucoma that can damage the optic nerve. If this damage is permanent, visual information cannot be properly sent to the brain; glaucoma patients often experience “blind spots” or even complete blindness.

Dr. Sastry offers glaucoma treatment at his San Jose location, serving Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Palo Alto. Treatment for glaucoma varies depending on the cause of drainage problems, but can range from medicated eye drops to laser surgery. Damage from glaucoma is often serious and permanent. Regular testing is the best way to detect glaucoma. To schedule a glaucoma test or talk about treatment, contact the Morgan Hill or San Jose location of the Center for Eye Care & Cosmetic Surgery.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

In addition to performing cosmetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, San Jose doctor Ragh Sastry also uses blepharoplasty to correct a number of medical conditions, including entropion, ectropion, ptosis, and certain eyelid tumors.

Entropion (turning inward of the eyelid) and ectropion (turning outward of the eyelid) are both conditions most often caused by aging or certain injuries. Ptosis is the medical term for drooping of the upper eyelid; once the eyelid obscures vision, the problem becomes medical in addition to cosmetic. Blepharoplasty, available at the San Jose Center for Eye Care & Cosmetic Surgery, can be used to correct entropion, ectropion, and ptosis by removing excess skin and correcting placement of some muscles.

Squamous and basal cell carcinomas, the eyelid tumors treatable with blepharoplasty, often occur in Dr. Sastry’s elderly, fair-skinned San Jose patients. Often found in the lower eyelid, eyelid tumors are often very successfully treated with surgery when found early. As a result, regular eye checkups are the best way to avoid needing blepharoplasty for eyelid tumors.

If you do need blepharoplasty, Dr. Sastry can probably perform your surgery in his office surgical suite, using advanced anesthetic techniques and radio frequency technology. To learn more about blepharoplasty, contact the San Jose or Morgan Hill office of Dr. Sastry to schedule a consultation.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy refers to any of the disorders caused by diabetes that damage to the retina, or area of the eye upon which light is focused. Depending on the cause and severity of diabetic retinopathy, vision blurriness or even blindness could occur.

The first stage of the disease is called nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), or background retinopathy. The blood vessels that serve the retina leak fluid or blood, causing the retina to swell. Mild cases of NPDR usually do not affect vision acuity.

Macular edema and macular ischemia are the secondary phases of diabetic retinopathy and the most common causes of vision loss in diabetic patients. The macula is the small area of the retina responsible for seeing small details. When the leaking blood vessels of the retina cause the macula to swell, central vision loss occurs. Laser treatment can often be used to control vision loss caused by macular edema.

Macular ischemia occurs when the blood vessels close up entirely, cutting off nutrition to the macula. Rather than losing their sight completely, patients with macular ischemia will instead experience blurry vision. There is currently no viable treatment for this condition.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy, or PDR, occurs when the retina grows new, fragile blood vessels to compensate for blood vessels that have closed off. These new vessels tend to leak dangerous amounts of fluid and blood into the eye, causing obscured vision due to the opaque material floating in the eye. If scar tissue forms around the blood vessels, the retina may become distorted or even detached.

In many cases, Dr. Sastry can perform surgery to correct the problems caused by all phases of diabetic retinopathy. Retinopathy can cause serious vision loss very quickly. Along with standard cataract and glaucoma monitoring, diabetic patients should discuss possible retinopathy treatment and surgery options every time they visit the San Jose office of Dr. Sastry, near Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Palo Alto.

Tear Duct and Tearing Problems

Tears are essential to the health of your eyes. Too much tearing, however, can cause infections in the lacrimal sac, or area where tears are produced. Excess tearing is usually caused by blocked tear ducts, which may be the result of nose surgery, sinus surgery, or facial trauma.

The surgery to clear blocked lacrimal ducts is called dacryocystorhinostomy, or DCR. Depending on your condition, Dr. Sastry may choose to use one of several surgical techniques, all of which have the intended outcome of creating a new passage for tears to travel from the lacrimal sac to the inner nose.

In addition to performing blepharoplasty, cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment, and the other procedures outlined above, San Jose and Morgan Hill area surgeon Ragh Sastry is fully versed in a wide range of cornea and eye problems, including pink eye (conjunctivitis) and growths such as pterygiums and pingueculas. Whether you need advice about diabetic retinopathy or simply a new prescription for your glasses, the Center for Eye Care & Cosmetic Surgery can help. Contact our San Jose or Morgan Hill office to schedule an appointment or checkout ZocDoc with Dr. Sastry.
